Modern Dance is one of the important kinds of theatrical dance, developed in the early twentieth century by choreographers such as Vaslav Nijinsky, Isadora Duncan, and Martha Graham, and led by the Paris-based ballet company Ballet Russes. It is a movement based on a rebellion against steps and positions and values expressive and original or authentic movement. This class is a quick-paced, advanced class, focusing on utilization on the dancer’s skills as a whole (strength, technique, body awareness, creative voice, performance, risk-taking ability). Students continue to perfect strength, balance, and awareness, as they are challenged with a variety of concepts (multi-spirals through the body, fall/recovery, release/recovery, juxtaposing movement qualities, multi-dimensional use of space). Students can expect each class to include a modern adagio, allegro and combination of movement. Students will regularly move into and out of the floor, move through inversions, and experience a variety of complex spacial patterns. This class is designed to both challenge and satiate dancers in a fun and supportive environment and is based on Limon and Release Techniques.
